Iowa hospitals and health systems have taken a major step toward transparency. IHA has developed a public website, Iowa Hospital Charges Compare, that allows health care consumers to receive basic information about inpatient and ambulatory services and charges at Iowa hospitals.

Data is gathered through the IHA inpatient and outpatient databases. The reports are based on specific types of hospitalization with the following information included for inpatient services:

  • The name of the selected hospital and a link to its website.
  • The number of discharges, the average length of stay, the average and median charges and the median age of the patients involved for (1) the selected hospital; (2) all hospitals in a specific Medicare class and (3) all Iowa hospitals. There is an option to compare the selected hospital to other individual hospitals.
  • The results shown are for all severities of illness within the service category (utilizing 3M All Patient Refined DRGs).
  • A link is provided to the Iowa Healthcare Collaborative website for data on quality and patient safety in Iowa.
  • Additional reports are based on specific ambulatory surgery procedures with the following information included:
  • The name of the selected hospital and a link to its website.
  • The average charges and break outs by procedure with no other procedure or procedures done with one or more additional procedures.
  • The reports are shown by (1) the selected hospital; (2) all hospitals in a specific Medicare class and (3) all Iowa hospitals.
