HHS Issues Public Health Emergency for Iowa

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has declared a public health emergency in the flood-stricken states of Iowa and Indiana.  This action gives the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services flexibility in enforcing some regulations to ensure that vital health care services can be maintained and utilized.  This release outlines further details regarding the declaration.

CMS Waiver of bed and length of stay limits

The Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals (DIA) has received notification from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) that Critical Access Hospitals (CAHs) may exceed their 25-bed limitation and 96 hour average length of stay during the public health emergency.  CAHs must notify DIA when patients received and admitted from the declared counties would result in the CAH exceeding its 25-bed limit.  Click here for more information.
