Physicians by definition are leaders in the hospital culture, but they are not formally trained in leadership, nor is training specifically aimed at physicians readily available in Iowa. In response to requests from Iowa hospitals for assistance in helping physicians better communicate, strategize, organize and work as leaders, IHA has created the Physician Leadership Institute of Iowa. The institute is an excellent tool for engaging physicians.

White Paper RE: Physician Leadership Institute Hospitals have an interest in developing strong physician leaders within their organizations, both for administrative and medical staff roles. In many Iowa communities the physicians will be employed by the hospital, in other cases the physician may not be employed or have a contractual relationship with the hospital or be employed by a public hospital. In these instances, hospitals will want to review the compliance principles at play when paying for physician leaders to participate. For assistance in identifying the applicable issues, see the issues brief developed by attorney John R. Holdenried with Baird Holm LLP.
